As I am very fortunate to live in Cornwall, I have been inspired to create something that reflects the Cornish coastline and combine some of my sewing talents.
Some of you may have heard that over the Christmas, New Year and into January period we endured some rather major storms – so much that part of the mainline railway between Cornwall and London was washed into the sea! As I write the repairs are still ongoing although we are assured that the track is to be re-opened in a few days time. This and the other storm damage inflicted on the coastal villages is a sober reminder that we cannot control the weather.
In between a couple of the storms Matthew and I took a walk along Perranporth beach. It has to be said that there was a lot of plastic rubbish that had been washed ashore – rather sad and definitely making me rethink the amount of plastic that we use and recycle. But amongst the rubbish there was a lot of driftwood which we collected up.
Some of this was used to make these mobiles.
The felt shapes and beads also have shells included that were also found on the local beaches. In the future it might be fun to source some glass beads that have been weathered by the action of the sea.
Having let my Folksy shop slip a bit last year, I am re-launching it and featuring these mobiles. I think they bring a nice reminder of the seaside and holidays to the home.
